Service Learning : Elderly Care Reflection (Feb. 18, 2009)

I think that our Service Learning Meeting was a success. The first thing we did was a reflection paper on the last meeting. Then we looked at the pictures from the previous meeting. I wasn't here that day when they went over to the Elderly Home, but by the looks of the picture it seemed like everything went well.


Although Mr. Todd did say that next time we should wait for the elderly to sit down first so we could fill in sits next to them. It looked like everybody just took a sit next to their friends in the service learning group, but it would be easier to interact with them if we would sit next to them.


After that we tried to plan ideas for the next two meetings in march. We decided to make up a survey for the elderly to see what they thought about our group and what they would like to do. For the last Service Learning Meeting in the month of March we decided that we would host a indoor picnic/talent show =]. I then typed up the survey for Mr. Todd so he could edit and print them out, so we could be prepared for the next meeting.

Service Learning : Elderly Care

My Service Learning group is "Elderly Care". Which is lead by Mr. Todd. My group consist of about 15 people and we focus on going to Elderly Homes to give the Elderly a sense of childhood. We help them have fun. With our different personalities and games. We also listen to them tell us many stories about their life because we know at times they don't really have anyone to talk to. When we are at school we plan different activites for them to do when we come for a visit.




Once we planned a bingo game that would be held at the Elderly Home down the street from our school. We sent out multiple emails to them, and we even visited them so they could know our faces. I made a flyer that would be faxed over to the Elderly Home and posted on the walls so that they would be aware of the bingo game. The day of the bingo game we brought over snacks that would thought they would like. We played numerous games and they really enjoyed our company. They asked us about our school and our life, and we asked out theirs. We had fun and we promised we would come back soon.


This Year I would like to hold fund raisers so we can donate money to the Elderly Home, and buy different things such as flowers etc. for them. I would also like to visit them more frequently.
Next Year: We could hold a multicultural event.
Senior Year: I would like to hold a possible fair that would bring the elderly together with their family



My dream goals for this group would be to take them on some type of vacation. Where they could enjoy peaceful days and nights! I would also like for people to recognize that these older people should be respected for they have experienced more than you could ever imagine. Next time you go visit your older relatives show them that you love them ♥ !
